One of the marked differences between the churches of Christ and denominations are the use of elders and deacons in the work of the church as opposed to 'pastors.'

The elders of the church are the overseers of the congregation and its souls (Acts 20:28).  They lead the congregation by servant leadership.  The Bible also uses the word 'pastors' when talking about elders.  There is never one pastor or elder in charge of a congregation - it is always plural in the Bible.  Therefore, we have a 'plurality' of elders in the congregation at Gainesville.

Following the pattern for church government set out in the New Testament, we also use deacons in the church.  The Deacons here at Gainesville perform certain tasks delegated by the elders.

One of the most visible positions in the church is the one of the pulpit preacher.  He is the one who is given the task of preaching the Word of God faithfully and completely.  He serves the congregation under the oversight of the elders.
